Portrait Of Kent, Canterbury Cathedral

The Portrait of Kent: Canterbury Cathedral is a social documentary portraiture series of photographs, which documents the life of the cathedral grounds along ‘The Precincts’ Road from 10:00 through to 14:30.

Motivated for the love of Canterbury Nat Lowden has spent serval days capturing the 17 portraits for the first volume of the photographic series, the photographic series is a celebration of the diversity and spirit of the nation’s most famous Cathedral.

The Series of Photographic Portraits are part of the Mixed Media Research and Mixed Media Project @cccu. For my First Semester of Year 3, this forms the basis of the Major Practical Project. That will be the basis of my final module at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Annotations: Anti Lockdown Protests in the USA (Rummler & Falconer, 2020)

 

The image denotes people protesting the coronavirus lockdowns in parts on the united states. These images show no social distancing to try and make a point that the virus is not that lethal and transmissible. The images connote the emotion of anger during the first lockdown when many Americans lost their jobs due to the lockdowns, the image communicates tension with the health message with more libertarian members out protesting with them carrying the Trump 2020 flag. The idea of the protests is to try and get the local, state and the federal government to unlock and try to return to a normal life.  The images have been controversial with people who are in favour of the lockdowns are saying this is a problem while the other side loves this protest.

As a viewer, I am affected by how the emotions have gone wild when it comes to protesting the coronavirus lockdowns. The images make you shocked with how many people are against the lockdowns in certain states of The United States, the images make me happy as they can peacefully protest. When looking at the images you are drawn into the number of people that are at the protests trying to make their voices heard, the images show how people want to live their lives. In direct contrast, the images will repulse people with no social distancing showing how the virus has managed to circulate so easily in parts of the US, the crowds for the type of person will people happy as they are protesting the lockdowns while others are angry as they are spreading the virus.

The strengths of these images are that they capture the narrative of how parts of the united states feel about the lockdowns, the weakness is that the images tell a story but does not show the other narrative of people is in favour of lockdowns. I am planning on using this as a reference point if I want to photograph anti lockdown protests in Kent or London

The work is significant to my project as it gives me another aspect to look at when it comes to the restrictions that the governments want to put in place. The use of composition with placing the protesters in the centre of the images gives them more power due to how the rule of thirds works in partnership. The position stands out to make the work to stand together. The visual styles that I am planning on taking forward are the styling of the protests to make my work stand out. If I do go on to photograph protests, I will go back and look at what has been done.

The intended audience was for newspapers and news organisation to show what has been going with the protests in the united states. The work is relevant to the time it was photographed to show what has happened I think it still holds today due to the ongoing protests against the lockdowns.

The context that I have seen the work has been online on my laptop this gives the images less power to shine due to it giving me a small picture. The work would be stronger in a gallery as the images would work well when they are made into the full proportion that people would need to see to get to understand what is going on. The use of the gallery in this instance would go under a series documenting the protests that had been going during the year to show how people reacted to them. I think looking at the images in a newspaper would give it more a formal context by highlighting what is going on when it comes to the protests and what each side made of it with left versus right and other political fractions.

Unhappy hour: London’s West End during lockdown

The images denote empty streets across London due to the closure of locations. The images are styled to be dark to highlight what is going on due to the current pandemic.  The images are all photographed at night due to many people going out to party in a normal time at this hour. 

The images connote the emotion of emptiness due to the streets being made empty during the first national lockdown. The images interpret how the parts of London that at night are normally busy are all deserted due to the lockdown. The images meaning is to document how the Lockdown has decimated parts of London’s culture capital.

As a viewer, I am affected by how empty the streets looked during the first lockdown.  The images make me feel upset for the companies that have been struggling throughout 2020. When looking at the images you look at the areas that are lit up with them conveying more information on how the area is dead due to the restrictions. The work makes people feel sad and disappointed that they cannot go out and have a pint in a pub in the west end.

The work is significant to my project as this highlight how my work could look if I was to go out and document what the lockdown is having during the party hours. The use of colour with the theme being dark as it stands out to the eye to make it stand out to the viewers. The idea from this is significant to the project as it stands out to the viewer as it comes together to make it important for people at home.

The strengths of this series are that it highlights what has been going when it comes to the first lockdown. The strengths are highlighted when you look at the images and see how the images are locked together to allow them to look fluid so it can stand to the eye.  The only weakness is that the captions shown are not ads in-depth as I would like it to be to show what they are about.

The visual styles that I am planning on taking forward are how the images have been photographed to show the lockdown has impact parts of Ashford My work will be different compared to this series as I am not planning on photographing in empty pubs or shops. I want the styles to have my viewpoint on it with the images having more colour and having a higher exposure.

The intended audience for this series is to create a news documentary of how parts of London has been affected by the first lockdown there was hardly anyone that left their house. It is important to document how Covid has impacted the capital. Looking at these images nearly a year on still shocks me due to how places were forced to close to protect the health service.  These images were designed to be part of a selection to document the bars to show how they need support to keep trading.

The context that I have seen the work has been online on my laptop this gives the images less power to shine due to it giving me a small picture. The work would be stronger in a gallery as the images would work well when they are made into the full proportion that people would need to see to get to understand what is going on. The images would work well as postcard to remember what has happened over the last year or so.

Canterbury during coronavirus lockdown From Kent Online

The images denote parts of Canterbury in the original lockdown with the images being taken during the first national lockdown. The images denote an empty city centre. The images show how the lockdown has removed everyone due to the stay-at-home order that was in place at the end of March and April. The images connote the senses of emptiness were the normally packed city centre has got not none going down the high street. The images communicate the feeling of loneliness as only key workers or people going for a daily walk could be out most of the times with places being forced to close to stop the spread. From the images, you see how nothing is going on with people who know the centre makes it harder to get your head around how empty Canterbury was.

As a viewer, I am affected by how the virus has destroyed the town centre with hardly anyone going out. The images show the subjects first at distance to show social distancing measures that are in place. The work makes people feel sad due to not being able to go out and do their normal shopping the images impression changes when you understand more about what is going at the location of the shots. 

The context that I have seen the work has been online on my laptop this gives the images less power to shine due to it giving me a small picture. The work would be stronger in a gallery as the images would work well when they are made into the full proportion that people would need to see to get to understand what is going on. The best gallery to show these images will be The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge in Canterbury show how the town has fared during the lockdown and has come out if it. I think the work could work well with something like Hold still that went around the United Kingdom to show how certain images will always be powerful no matter what has changed.

The work is significant to my project as it focuses on one of the locations that I am planning on photographing in. The composition of the wide shots of the locations and the medium shots of the subjects makes the images flow smoothly and look stronger. I am planning on taking this visual style further on in my work when I photograph on location. The style of having the images designed to look simply is important as it allows the viewer to follow what is going on at the location without having to pay too much attention to the shots, I am not planning to get an empty street now as I do not know how the lockdown is going to be the second time around. I like how the photographer has used the major location of the Canterbury city centre this allows people who do not Canterbury that well to understand what is going on there. 

The strengths of the work are that it shows how the town has become empty to the restrictions and how the life that we lead has impacted on it. I am planning to add my style on to the work as a set these images work well and are incredibly strong. I am planning on using the High-street and not the side location in my work. 

The intended audience for this was for people who read the local news as it was published on the local news website Kent Online. The work is important to understand what is going when it comes to the current pandemic and the impact that it is having on the local community.  Reading the images today amazes me thinking that over 9 months ago that the country was in this current situation and was facing a huge problem.  The images will always shock people when they see how Canterbury has been affected in lockdown version one and my images will be focusing on the second Lockdown.

Annotations: Pandemic London Streets - Ki Price (price, 2020)

The images denote empty streets down London’s culture districts in the West End which features the Royal Opera house and Covent Garden.  The images denote the impact the Lockdown has had on the culture of London. The images connote the feelings of emptiness as all the images are showing London to be empty with nothing going on when the photos were taken during the beginning of the original lockdown back in March and April. The images communicate how people were staying at home during the first wave when everyone feared the pandemic and the impact that it might have on their health.

As a viewer, I am affected by the way she has photographed London with the use of black and white to make the images stand out to the viewers. The use of not having colour makes the images bolder and stronger so it is easier to understand what is going on at the location. The images make people feel disappointed and sad about seeing what has happened to London during the first lockdown. The viewers will look at the brighter tones first as the eyes are naturally drawn to this setup.

The work is significant to my project as it captures the Lockdown. I like the colours that were not used which give London an old-fashioned tone to the images that causes the images to have more power. I think the use of a wide-angle shots makes the work stand out stronger as it captures most of the area which gives the images more context to understand what the images are like and needs to be done to improve the shots to get them to become stronger.  I am planning on using how she has used the angles when I take the ideas into my project.

The strengths of this work are that shows London during Lockdown and it shows the impact that Lockdown has had on the Nightlife. What I am going to be doing differently is that I am planning on shooting Ashford and Canterbury and I will be using colour to show what is like in the second Lockdown.

The visual styles that I am planning on taking forward are the use of a wide-angle lens to capture the local towns to show how it has been impacting local places. I am not planning on using a tripod compared to how the photographer has used on in their work. I am planning on offering images with more people have become complacent with how the rules are in use.

The indented audience for the images is blogs and news sites that are reporting on how the Lockdown took place. It was aimed to time stamp the impact that Lockdown has had in March and April. The work is important to show how government policies have impacted the life and culture in the country.

The context that I have seen the work has been online on my laptop this gives the images less power to shine due to it giving me a small picture. The work would be stronger in a gallery as the images would work well when they are made into the full proportion that people would need to see to get to understand what is going on.

George Georgiou Fault Lines

 

The images denote parts of turkey and showing how new buildings are coming up and the impact that they are having on the community as the country becomes modern. The images of the buildings are shown to be taken with a wide-angle lens to show more of the context of the area, while some of the portraits are taken close to the subject. George Georgiou work is designed to highlight the differences that can occur, this is connoted by the way he has positioned the camera in different parts of the areas and allowed the area to speak. The message coming from his work is important to understand how people from this country might go over there to understand the impact on people’s lives. His work is about the tensions of the divide as Turkey is the border to Europe and the Middle East two contrasting areas. The divisions include modernity and tradition, secularism and Islamism, democracy, and repression—often in unlikely and contradictory combinations. These divisions are a huge problem as there are parts of Turkey and Muslims (Shura)that want democracy and you have others in the east who think democracy is a waste of space.

I am affected by the viewer with the images highlighting the huge divide with the half on the left showing a well built up and a rich location while the half on the right shows neglect and negative space and these shots show how the west of turkey are rich and the east is poor and with problems.  I am fascinated by how the shots are almost like the Berlin wall was hidden with the problems that occurred in Germany with the west being rich and the poor being the east. As viewer I am also affected due to how the images being empty impacts the eye showing the wealth divide which can make the viewer feel upset.

The work is significant to my project as it highlights the problems the communities faces and the work allows buildings to be captured at different angles. The work stands out as being different from what I have seen as this work is about a social documentary scene. I like how the composition has been layed out with the selected images showing nothing in detail but capturing an establishing shot of the local communities and how they are dealing with life.


The strengths of this work are important to understand how changes are impacting small local communities in turkey what I am going differently compared to what has been photographed is change it to bridges. The strength of it showing another aspect that I can work on for my project with making it to link with new and old, this would work for my project if there were no major travel restrictions in place.

The visual styles that I am planning taken forward are the way the work has been presented with the angles shown in the detail of the image when it comes to the bridges showing at another viewpoint. This might end up happening but given that I am working with the film it might not be possible to get at every angle. I will be offering a viewpoint of Ashford and Canterbury’s bridges and not what is going in this location.

The indented audience is for people of the area to show how the town and country have been progressing over the years with new meeting old, the work is contemporary showing the area what the lives about showing the poverty. The images are important as it captures how turkey has changed over the years.

The context that I have seen this work in has been on my laptop which makes the images look flatter and not interesting compared to if they were placed in the gallery. The use of the gallery will make the images stronger as it will be able to show the journey that has been undertaken with the viewer being able to relate to the text shown.

Annotations, Bridges, all from “ASHFORD KENT REMEMBERING THE WAY IT ONCE WAS”

The images denote several bridges located in Ashford, these bridges are Newtown rail bridge, Ashford International and others. The images are featured are all located from the local Facebook page to understand the History of some of the bridges in Ashford. You can see in the image’s peoples snapshots from the past.

The images interpreted the history of parts of Ashford showing how the town has changed over the years. The images communicate the feeling of nostalgia with how parts of this town have changed when they have upgraded parts of the town to make it fit for the next couple years to make life easier for most people. The meaning behind these photos being uploaded to Facebook is to show people the past of Ashford for people who are young or new to the town.

The work is significant to my project as these images are some of the locations that I am planning on using going forward in shooting around the town. I like the composition with some of the images not being centre for safety reasons which is what I am going to replicate, I like how the ideas behind the work are about showing the past. I am planning on showing Ashford in the present as with the use of film they will be frozen in time and a lot harder to edit.

The strengths of these images are that it tells a story of how the town has changed, the images are strong on their own however I am planning on using them to mould together to make them stronger. The weakness that I can think of is that the images are not the high quality which is due to Facebook downsizing the images.

I am planning on taking forward how some of the images have been set up to capture what is going on at the locations. I am not planning on using the same set up on all but I am planning on getting the images as shown in these at an angle in order to keep my self from the road or other hazards that might be beside me. I am planning on offering them all in black and white to make my images different.

The original intended audience was for the member of the public to capture how the town is changing and this allows them to look back on there archive. The intended audience for the posts is to show nostalgia when it comes to the past of the town’s history. Images have changed over time with it showing how the news and what is going on at the time and with the images today it shows the remembrance of the time that has gone by.

The context of the images that I have selected have all come from Facebook, the images are designed to show how the town has changed over the years. This would work well in a gallery to show the history of the town with the changes. This would not work in a national gallery due to the fact it is about local history, but the work is important for the town centre and the locals from Facebook.

Annotations: Bernd and Hilla Becher

The artist has made other works as shown featuring water towers, barns, gas towers and many more, for their work in the new topographic.

The work denotes old, abandoned buildings around the world. The work shows multiple images in the same print with some being 3x3 or refers to allow the viewer to understand what is going on.

The images connoted the feeling of power with how the images have all been composed together. The Images highlight how the structures that in a normal sense are ugly and an eye saw can look in interesting. The meaning of the images is to show the everyday boring set up with the location all being mundane and ugly with the use of the topology the images look interesting. The images are about objects looking the same with the horizon and the planes to make it stand out to the eye. The use of having the subjects being in the same set up allows the symbols to come together and form a natural harmony to accompany them. 


As a viewer, I am amazed by the power that the images convey with all of them being lined up to look the same with nothing being different. All the images are designed to be equal to show the set up with the only thing that is different is the location which makes the images work in unison and as an ally. When looking at the images you will see the same pattern with the locations with your eyes looking at every detail as almost you are finding the out one out, in the setup.



The work is significant to my project as I am planning on using the composition of the images in my work with how the subjects are placed in the centre which makes them easier on the eye and with the placement allows more of a story to be told. The ideas that they have used to show the subjects are powerful with them making sure everything is aligned perfectly to give the OCD message when it comes to perfection. I like how they have taken something that we would see every day in the mundane with it being overlooked and with it being ugly and turn it to something beautiful with the setup.


The strengths of this work are the way all of the images have been lined up together, I am going to change it with it not all going to be straight on this due to safety reasons when making my project as I cannot step into a busy road or railway line as I might get injured. The weakness is that the work is not appalling on my laptop screen as they are too small which makes the need to see this in a gallery more important.

I am planning on taking forward how the images have been laid out in a contact sheet format however I am, not going to be shooting straight on due to safety reasons. I cannot shoot some of the locations that they have used due to the virus and some of them have been knocked down as they were rubbish.

The original intended audience was for students that they taught with them being able to understand what they want to show when it came to this movement. The work is aimed at people to understand what it is going on outside.

The context that I have seen this work has been on my laptop since all galleries are closed due to the coronavirus and I am not meant to travel to look at art. The work is still powerful on my laptop with the way it has all been framed but it will look a lot stronger on a wall in its full size. The work is on the wall with the original print size will allow the work to speak about how the industry is being kept and how they work gives meaning, and you can understand what is about. The work needs people to spend time looking at it which can only be achieved in a gallery setting.

Annotations, Teddy on tour! (Pemberton, 2015)

The images denote a teddy bear at random locations with the bear being photographed to be the centre of focus. The bears are at the edge of the frame showing the location in the full glory. When looking at the images you see different locations were the teddy bear has been photographed at with the use of different colours from the scenes with them being strong.

The connoted sections of the images are that the bear is replacing his wife in all the photos as she does not like having her photograph being taken. The symbol of the bear is designed to be his wife in all of the locations that he has travelled to in the past. The meaning of the teddy bear is to show the love of Kneidinger’s wife respecting her wishes that she does not like being photographed. The feelings for the bear is loneliness with at times the bear being shown on its own at different locations.  When looking at the work without any original context the work looks like it is a photoshoot for a soft toy company due to the way it has all been positioned.

As a viewer, I am affected by the work with how the photographer is respecting his wife’s wishes with her camera-phobia. On my laptop, the use of having higher saturated images gives the bear more power to the eye with him being sharp and colourful. The use of having high saturation gives the message of warmth and pleasure when looking at the images, as the eye will be drawn into the higher saturation of the images, this has allowed more people to look at the images without getting bored. When looking at the images you instantly see the bear on the location due to the fact it is one of the most recognisable objects, the use of having the same scarf makes all the images come together and the viewer to know that the bear is the same but the location has changed.

The original audience that the work was for the Kneidinger’s holiday album to look back at some of the locations he has visited in the past when he was on holiday. The work is important to him as it documented his time away with Kneidinger’s wife for memories, it is important to other people whose relatives don’t like being photographed with them getting ideas with what they can do. The work is contemporary as Kneidinger’s uses the bear to show his wife and it being consistent across all of the images.

The context that I have seen this  work has been on the Daily Mail’s website on my laptop which may have impacted the reading of these images due to the saturation with using different computers it will give me a different colour temperature compared to the version of my screen.  I think the work would complement a gallery setting due to the way the photographs have been taken and placed to show what has been going on with it giving the images more power than they currently have. The images I think were due to go into the magazine from the Daily Mail on the weekend as this is what is normally printed.

People around the world are leaving out teddy bears for children on their daily walks to spot

(Bakar, 2020)

The denoted sections in these images are that teddy bears being left outside for people to look at them when they are going to their walks during the lockdown. The images show them being outside so people can look at them being pleased with them. On looking at what has connoted the images telling a story about what life is going on with the current Cobid-19 Pandemic. When looking at the images it shows what people had been going through due to Covid-19 this is highlighted when looking at how they are placed. The meaning behind these teddy bears is to make people look at them and to bring a smile to their face when outside when they are lonely. On some of the bears, there is hygiene information to show what they should or should not do when it comes to the virus. The way they are presented is to make people wonder about what is going on.

I am affected with this work by the message the story is about it gives me sadness about what has been going due to the life we have to live under due to the current climate. When looking at the images you look at the teddy bears first due to how they have been presented to the eye this has been done as the main story for this work is to show the life of the pandemic in the time. When looking at the image it shows stories that people are trying to highlight with the life that they are currently living under. The stories are at times on some of these bears are shown below or a link to find out more about them, the bears are placed out to make young children happy. When looking at the images together it fills me with happiness that we are coming together at a time of great problems with the lockdown that was in place when this story was written. The ideas that I am planning on talking from this body of work is how they have shown the teddy bears to the viewer, I am going to take on the style of how it has all been presented to the eye.  

The work is significant to my project because I am planning on making stickman my desirable object and when looking at the images it shows emotion to highlight the problem of the virus. I am planning on taking forward how the toys are placed in the centre so it can be looked at quickly when people are scrolling through social media. The work is important to highlight the time of the lockdown.

The strengths of the work are that it shows what people got up to during lockdown, the main strength is that is they all link together when it came to the message of hope with the bears. The thing I will do differently is not using bears but stick man and use different locations, the weakness when downloading them is the resolution is not the best that is all I think is the problem due to the fact they could not go out as often.

The original article was aimed at parents with young children to try and get them to take part in this scavenger like hunt when it came to looking for the bears. The work is important to the time as it relates to the virus and how we had to change, the work is also important as a morale booster when we are all locked inside and with nothing to do. The work will hold in time as lockdown 1 has been a challenge for many and people will look back at the time forced to stay inside to prevent people from dying.

The only place I have looked at the images has been online with the context from it showing what happened before. This will work in a newspaper as it is from the Metro and this means it will be in print, the difference is going to be how the images are placed so the viewer can get the most out of the article without losing track. I think they would work in an online gallery not a physical one as young children will not enjoy it as much as they will want to find the bear themselves. This would work as a map with the location to take part in a covid secure scavenger hunt to find the bears outside, thus allowing them to get outside and not be in the way and likely give others the virus.

Project Proposal: The desirable Object

Stick Man

Concept

The Concept for the project is to focus on the toys from Julia Donaldson’s books The Gruffalo and Stick man, the toys are simple but the catch the imagination of many people across the world. The toys will be photographed at home, on location and the studio. I am planning on photographing the toys. Some of the toys will be photographed to look funny and comedic. The toys will be done to look like an advert for the toys, this will be done using branding from the books and using similar typefaces to make them stronger. The demographic is going to be parents and their children with the factor being the books are aimed at young children. The work will be made to show the popularity of the books and the toy in the run-up to Christmas.

Methodologies

When it comes to the Methodologies the location of this shoot will be done at home, at university and on the move thus allowing more flexibility if we go into another Lockdown in the future this projects can be covered on the future. The work will be done with no help due to the virus and this is project will make the advert stand out for the viewer.

Intended Publication/ Audience

The intended audience for the project is going to be young children as I am going to be using the Gruffalo and the stick man character with the book being aimed at young children. The outcome is to make the work look like an elf on the self-styled campaign. This will allow me to take advantage of any Covid lockdown or forced self-isolation `by the government. The work will all be published on my social media feeds and website.

Equipment Used

The equipment that I am going to be using is a Nikon D3400 with a 35mm with this being the equipment that I have available. I will be using a light meter at home when it arrives on the w/c 26/10 this will allow me to get a decent amount of ambient lighting in my bedroom. When looking at syncing my camera to Lightroom it will not work as my camera is not supported to be tethered so I will be going with the Nikon based app and the back of the camera and review it regularly by manually importing the images.

Skills

The Skills that I am going to need to improve when it comes to this project is how to shoot in dark ambient light when it comes to the object due to the fact that I do not have any studio equipment at home. I am also going to try and make sure that stick man is in the right place and can be photographed on a lower ISO than it might be required. I am going to try and tether my camera by using Nikon’s Capture and view applications for my camera as Lightroom does not support my camera.

Writers 

The writer that I am going to be researching is Julia Donaldson, as she is the author the project is going to be based around when it comes to stick man. I am going to be using her as the main subject and focusing on how she has used the guy and how I could model him to make it link to her book and how it could be changed given the current Covid restrictions.
